According to Swansea based IT firm BSS, more businesses than ever are taking an interest in the efficiency of their machinery and equipment and how staff members operate at work to reduce output and increasing savings.
BSS, which has been running for 25 years and is based at Garngoch Estate in Gorseinon, says that as businesses are realigning themselves to grow in 2010 off the back of the recession they are experiencing an increased demand for Green IT Audits - assessments of how processes in an office are carried out and if machinery can reduce outgoings and the impact of a business on the environment.
With the aim of saving energy, reducing waste and reducing the number of print-outs that staff carry out, BSS are offering companies across Swansea free Green IT Audits to help get them in shape for the year ahead.
To help businesses across Swansea start 2010 on the right foot BSS are holding a two-day exhibition at The Ethos Building in SA1 where they will be demonstrating how businesses can reduce their environmental impact and save time and money. The event, called 'The Way Ahead 2010' will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, January 20 - 21.
According to BSS Managing Director Teifion Davies, procedures don't need to be costly to reduce energy usage and simple steps can be taken that will both improve carbon emissions and save money.
Teifion said: "Most businesses had a difficult year last year, and as we all look ahead into 2010 there are very easy considerations that can be implemented to help reduce energy and at the same time save on costs.
"If you lease your hardware, or are in a position to buy, new machinery will without doubt run far more efficiently as PCs older than three years have reduced efficiency, greater energy consumption and much slower processors.
"A new PC can be as much as 58% more energy efficient than a new one, but aside from new machinery simple measures like reducing printing - especially in colour - will save a fortune on printer running costs and toners in particular.
"By carrying out a Green IT Audit early on companies can save significantly throughout 2010. The best place to begin is by creating a company-wide policy for switching off all non-critical IT equipment at the end of each day and at weekends. By making just these simple steps energy consumption will be vastly reduced."
